Before applying, please read the following conditions required by the Fire & Emergency Services Act & Regulations, and the Light Regional Council:
To apply for a burning permit within a designated township your property must be 1 Acre or larger (4,000 square metres).
Please refer to the CFS website for the Mid North fire danger season dates.
Upon receipt of your application one of Council’s Fire Prevention Officers will contact you by phone to discuss your request. This can take up to 5 business days. Unless a physical inspection of your property is required the Officer will then prepare the burning permit and email/post it to you. Until such time no burning is allowed.
The burning permit will remain valid up to the commencement of fire danger season to allow you to conduct further burning under the same circumstances and conditions. A burning permit may be revoked at any time for a breach of the application and/or permit conditions.
A standard burning permit is subject to the following conditions:
- The holder of the burning permit is liable for any loss or damage caused by a fire lit and maintained under the authority of this permit.
- The holder of the permit must have the means and equipment to control or extinguish the fire if needed.
- Burning may only be carried out between 10:00am and 6:00pm on the day on which it is lit, not being a Sunday or public holiday (other than a special permit issued for a bonfire with specified conditions for burning times and size of fire).
- Heaps not to exceed 3 x 3 x 1.5 metres, and 1 heap to be burnt at a time in order to safely manage the burning. Each heap must have a non-flammable clearance of 4m all round and overhead.
- Minimum of 1 person must be present at the fire from the time it is lighted to the time it is completely extinguished.
- Only dry paper, dry cardboard, dry wood or dried garden pruning’s may be burnt. The burning of wood treated with copper-chrome-arsenate or other chemical preservative or any other toxic matter is prohibited.
- Ensure that smoke from the fire does not cause an annoyance for your neighbours.
Please be advised that the Police, as well as Council have the authority to take action for breaches of the permit conditions.
