The name is derived from the Aboriginal nuraitpa - the 'neck country', an apparent reference to this being the neck of a giant being called Wano of the Kaurna tribe. At Nuriootpa the Mount Lofty Range highlands are narrow and low which possibly gave rise to the idea.
