Light Regional Council has pledged its full commitment to protecting the much-loved Canary Island palms along Seppeltsfield Road at Marananga.
At its meeting on 26 August 2025, Council resolved to pursue undergrounding the powerlines so that no palm trees need to be removed.
A working group including community representatives will be established to help drive the project and explore funding opportunities, while Council also seeks State Government support through the Power Line Environment Committee (PLEC).
Mayor Bill Close said the decision reflects both community sentiment and Council’s determination to preserve an iconic part of the Barossa landscape.
“These trees are part of the heritage and character of our region. Council is committed to working with the community and government partners to secure their future for generations to come.”
