Media Release - Accelerated Infrastructure Upgrade Program

$15 million Accelerated Infrastructure Upgrade Program

Light Regional Council, in partnership with the Local Government Association and the South Australian Government is embarking on an exciting Accelerated Infrastructure Upgrade Program, which will create almost 40 new full-time jobs over the next two years.

The program will upgrade and enhance a broad range of infrastructure across the Light Regional Council area, including the sealing of 72 township roads in Allendale North, Freeling, Gawler Belt, Greenock, Kapunda, Roseworthy and Wasleys.

Street trees, street lighting, kerbing and guttering are part of the road upgrade program which will also include sealing specific tourist routes in the Seppeltsfield area.

More than 18 kilometres of footpaths will be created, linking schools, doctors, shopping precincts and tourist attractions and there will be significant stormwater upgrades in Freeling, Greenock, Kapunda and Wasleys.

Council’s $12 million contribution to the $15 million project has been made possible by utilising the revenue from the Gawler Water Reuse Scheme which generates revenue for the Council from the sale of water to Seppeltsfield vineyards which in turn produces some of South Australia’s finest wines.

The other $3 million is funded through the State Local Government Infrastructure Partnership.

Prominent South Australian company Best Bricks & Pavers will supply all of the pavers and provide all of the labour to lay more than 20,000 square metres of pavers through five towns.

Mayor Bill O’Brien says, “The Accelerated Infrastructure Upgrade Program will transform townships which have had to endure mud in the Winter months and dust over the Summer. They’ll soon have kerbing, sealed roads and footpaths to walk on, in addition to the many new full-time jobs this program will create. This project highlights the capacity of local government in South Australia to invest in jobs growth for our local communities.”

Shamrock Way at Roseworthy is the first parcel of works for Council’s Accelerated Infrastructure Upgrade Program which is scheduled for completion by December 2019.
