Red Bull 'Branched Out' Event For Kapunda

Kapunda to Host for the First Time in South Australia ‘2019 Red Bull Branched Out’ 17 – 19 October.

Kapunda with its rich tapestry of stories, characters and heritage will host for the first time in South Australia, ‘Red Bull Branched Out’, an international freestyle tree climbing competition for tree climbers and arborists.

Conveniently located in the Light Region of South Australia, Kapunda is just over an hour north of Adelaide. Renowned for its contribution to the economic development of early South Australia with the discovery of copper, Kapunda was also home to legendary characters such as Sir Sidney Kidman and the Dutton family.

No matter the weather, in October, the large gum trees in Kapunda’s Davidson Reserve will challenge tree climbers to hit many targets in the 25-30 metre high and wide trees.

Each climber starts at the top of the tree and descends through the canopy hitting targets which are set to make the climber move from one side of the tree canopy to the other resulting in large swings and limb walks.

There will also be a stand-alone event at night where climbers will compete under lights to ascend and climb head to head up to 25 metres.

The ‘Red Bull Branched Out’ event is the largest tree climbing events in the world and will attract up to 150 international competitors with 57 already registered from 10 countries. 50 crew and technicians will set up and deliver over 400 event starts over the two days.

Along with the freestyle competition and single rope ascent event, interactive activities are planned to engage children to learn about trees and the core skills used by professional tree climbers.

Light Regional Council Mayor Bill O’Brien commented that: ‘Red Bull Branched Out’ is a unique, family friendly, world class event attracting competitors from around Australia and internationally. Mayor Bill also stated ‘.That previous Red Bull Branched Out events held in other parts of Australia have attracted considerable media attention and strong community support. The event promises to attract many spectators to Kapunda over the two main competition days and apart from community wellbeing, will provide a welcome boost to the local economy.

Tourism Barossa Regional Tourism Manager Cathy Wills commented ‘The Red Bull Branched Out event provides a brilliant opportunity to showcase Kapunda and the Light region to visitors from Australia and around the world, as they spend time in this regional area that is steeped in South Australia’s history. There is no doubt that participants and spectators alike will have a fantastic experience!’

‘The economic impact that events bring to a region is significant – I hope that we see numerous events choosing regional locations such as Kapunda as their preferred location, so that participants are able to discover the hidden sides of our beautiful country towns.’

Kapunda met the selective criteria to host this event being chosen over sites in Victoria and Western Australia. Council looks forward to working with Arboriculture Australia and Red Bull Australia in bringing this world class event to our region 17 - 19 October 2019 and hosting the competitors and the many spectators the event will attract.
