Kapunda Town Square

Light Regional Council has applied for $510,000 funding under the State Government’s Places for People grant program

Light Regional Council has applied for $510,000 funding under the State Government’s Places for People grant program, to develop the proposed Kapunda Town Square on the corner of Main & Crase Streets.

This project will create a smart new town square within Kapunda for the use of locals and visitors to the area.

Once established, the 1560m2 town square will feature paved areas suitable for holding markets and events such as concerts, street festivals and other community celebrations.

It will also incorporate green landscaped areas for heightened amenity and recreational use.

There will be structures to provide shelter for the market space, amongst other extended Main Street frontage areas. Council considers this a longstanding need in the township.

Kapunda presently has no dedicated main street open spaces for passive recreation, community gatherings or events equivalent to those found in many other comparable country towns.

Mayor Bill O’Brien adds:

"This project will change that and create a vibrant new community meeting place for the town.

The square will be located at the convergence of the Kidman, Heysen and Mawson trails, directly opposite Kapunda's Visitor Information Centre – an ideal location.

It will be a space for people to enjoy the outdoors whilst accessing free public wifi, and will be reflective of the town's history in new and interesting ways."

The Kapunda Town Square project also involves an upgrade to Crase Street in the vicinity of the square, including new street trees and improved footpaths.

This will link the town square and Main Street to the existing Crase Street public carpark, which will be sealed and line marked.

Provided our application is successful, we hope to start work on the town square in June 2017.

The project may take up to eight months to complete.

The Council is keen to engage with the community on the final design and construction and is seeking interested members of the public to form a focus group. The focus group is intended to represent broad interests of the general public, involving people who have experience/skills/interests in design and local knowledge of Kapunda area.

If any members of the public are interested in representing the community on a focus group you are asked to contact Council on the details below, briefly outlining your alignment with any of the following objectives:

  • Interest in the local area, history, attractions and need for public facilities
  • Experience or skills with landscaping and/or open space design
  • Interest in local indigenous history/knowledge
  • Interest of experience in public art

The Council is seeking registrations of interest to be on the focus group prior to 5.00pm 12 May 2017.
